Arte e spazio urbano 1968-1976 (Urban Art and Space)

FUORI!

In the years around 1970, artists take to the streets, “getting out” of museums and art galleries, wanting to confront themselves with the real world and involve a broader audience on political, social and ideological issues, through performances, actions, animations, installations, sculptures… It is a means of redefining their language for “a creative repossession of the urban fabric”, through an art that is no longer conceived for museums or the market, but aimed at public involvement. The exhibition presents emblematic moments of the relationship between art and urban space in Italy from 1968 to 1976. Four historic exhibits have been chosen to explore the lively and contradictory climate of that period; while being diverse in their methods of intervention and thematic characteristics, they all represent benchmarks for the history of public art in Italy: Arte povera + azioni povere (Amalfi, 1968; Germano Celant, curator), Campo Urbano (Como, 1969; Luciano Caramel, curator), Festival del Nouveau Réalisme (Milan, 1970; Pierre Restany, curator), and Volterra ’73 (Volterra, 1973; Enrico Crispolti, curator).

The novelty of this exhibition lies primarily in the story of those years told through expressly restored videos and photographic sequences able to adequately account to the widespread vitality and original experimentation in the field of art. The large glass windows of the Arengario allow one to capture fragments of the exhibition even from outside, from the street that runs along the Museum, with the intent of actualizing the ‘historic’ actions of the artists in urban exteriors, involving passersby in a sort of short circuit between past and present.
