Focus

ELENA MEZZADRA

The focus dedicated to Elena Mezzadra springs from the willingness to pay a tribute to an artist, now ninety years old, who proceeds tirelessly with her research, who continues painting according to her own style, always faithful but never identical to herself.

Her large compositions, so complex and elaborate, stem from what the artist defines as a simple ‘initial gesture’ traced directly on the canvas, which then lends the structure and internal rhythm to the work of art. This sign thus takes on a structuring action, a synthesis that gives an imprint to the painting from the very first brushstroke. In this way, the image preserves an incredible expressive strength, despite the homogeneity of the colours and the accuracy of the brushstrokes. Without drastic caesura, her non informal abstract art is, in a sense, almost obsessive: not only does each new painting include previous research, but the last work encompasses also the first.
